Take A Walk With Your Children

If you’re visiting the San Bernardino Mountains, in California, make sure to stop at the Children’s Forest with your children.

Located between Running Spring and Big Bear Lake, you’re at around 7,000 ft. You’ll find it on Highway 18 just a mile or so up the mountain from Running Springs. The park is closed in winter due to snow.

When my children were small we would go there at least once a week in summer. They were three and four years old when we started walking the trail. You can make it as short or long a walk as you like. Be sure to have water with you. The sun can be hot.

You’ll find plaques all about the place explaining the plants that grow there. You will see small lizards running about the rocks. Don’t worry. They’re more afraid you than you are of them. A Hawk could be flying overhead at any time. There is a population of Bald Eagles living in Big Bear and you very well could spot one. Toward the back of the Forest there’s a pond. A ski slope is located just up the road and they use the water to make snow. Eagles do like fish.

The most wonderful site we encountered was a mother Mountain Quail leading her family about. A protected bird 토토핫 there on the mountain, one of the most beautiful birds I have ever seen.

My two kids were fascinated by the place. I read all the plaques to them and I could see how the park kept their interest every time we visited. I lived there for eight years and they never grew tired of it. The walk changes all the time. Different flower would be in bloom. There is Liken growing on the rocks and giant boulders. Birds, bugs, and creatures make it their home. The sky is beautiful. Above all the smog, it’s a great big blue sky.

Keller’s Peak is the entrance road. If you drive up to the top there is a fire watch tower,The Deerlick Fire Station. It isn’t manned any more but you can enter it when they have it open. It’s a little climb up the stairs. The view makes it well worth it. At the top of the tower you’re at 10,000 Ft.

If you are getting hungry after your walk there a couple places to get a bite to eat in Running Springs. Hamburgers and Fries to a Steak. If you enjoy Mexican food a little place called Toto’s has the best!
